A Canadian donor can only claim a deduction if they have received an official receipt for a gift. If you would like your donors, members, event attendees, and purchasers to claim any part of their gift as an eligible donation, you must issue an official receipt. Canadian organizations may issue receipts as needed from their NeonCRM.
Please refer directly to the Canadian Revenue Agency and your legal representatives to determine when you will issue receipts. One requirement is that the gift must "enrich the charity" more than it provides an "advantage" to the donor. To help track this, we have created three fields.
Advantage Amount - The dollar value of the advantage the donor gained from this gift. Can be $0.
Eligible Amount - A calculated field. The amount of the transaction minus the Advantage Amount.
Advantage Description - A free-entry field for the organization to describe the advantage.
All positive value transactions occurring in NeonCRM will enter the Awaiting Review queue of the CRA Receipts module. This includes the following:
- donations (including in-kind)
- event registrations
- memberships
- store purchases
- shopping carts containing multiple items
- transactions arriving through online forms
- transactions entered manually
- donations entered in a batch
Annual receipts will also be available to issue from the CRA Receipts module.
The following cannot be receipted in NeonCRM:
- imported transactions
- $0 transactions (excluding in-kind donations)
However, not all transactions should result in a receipt for the giver. Please refer directly to the Canadian Revenue Agency and your legal representatives to determine when you will issue receipts.
