DAF Overview
A Donor-Advised Fund or DAF is a charitable giving account that allows individuals to donate assets such as cash, stocks, or non-publicly traded assets.
Donors contribute to the DAF for an immediate tax deduction and then have the flexibility to direct the funds to various charitable organizations over time. However, DAFs can only be used for fully tax-deductible contributions, such as donations, gifts, and grants. These funds often involve substantial amounts of money, usually in the thousands of dollars or more.
Chariot Overview
Chariot is a tool designed to enhance donation forms by adding a payment method branded as DAFpay. It functions similarly to payment options like Apple Pay or Google Pay, where donors see the DAFpay option during the checkout process on a donation form. Chariot integrates with various DAF providers, allowing donors to log into their DAF accounts and direct funds to charities seamlessly. By doing so, Chariot simplifies the donation process for donors, enabling them to easily access and utilize their DAF funds.
By enrolling in DAFpay by Chariot and Neon Pay, DAF funds, termed "distributions" in Neon Pay, are automatically captured in the Neon Pay platform alongside credit card charges and echecks. This allows easier money management because all of the funds are located in one convenient location. Additionally, depending on the merchant's Neon application, the funds can be counted towards donor's profiles, campaigns, and more. By using Chariot, clients will no longer need to import DAF funds as offline transactions or manage them in a separate system.
Enroll with Chariot During Merchant Account Setup
For US-based organizations, you can enroll in Chariot during the Merchant Account Setup process. For this example, the entire Merchant account set up process will not be demonstrated.
Note: if you already have a merchant account, you do not need to create a new one. Please see Enroll with Chariot After Merchant Account Setup below.
- To locate a merchant account, select the Merchant Accounts tab from the top navigation menu.
- Then, select New Merchant Account.
- DAF enrollment will only be shown if your organization is marked as a ‘nonprofit’ in the Organization information step. Only 501(c)3 nonprofits are eligible to enroll in Chariot. If you need assistance with enrolling in Chariot, please reach out to Neon Pay support.
- Moving to Step 5, or DAF Enrollment, you have the option to enroll in the Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) distribution program, offered through a partnership between Neon One and Chariot. If you choose to enroll, the DAFpay button will be added to your Neon application checkout forms. This allows donors to make contributions directly from their DAFs. You can choose to enroll now or decide to enroll later.
Complete your First Name, Last Name, and Email Address. Adding your Phone Number is optional.
The Registered Organization Name and EIN will be automatically populated based on the information provided in step 2. If your preferred organization name differs, enter it in the ‘Preferred Organization Name’ field.
Note: If you have multiple merchant accounts under the same EIN, you will all be enrolled in Chariot automatically. If you have multiple EINs, each must be enrolled separately. If you wish to exclude any merchant account from using DAFpay, contact Neon Pay support for assistance in disabling this feature.
- After completing the merchant account application, Neon Pay will create your account and forward your enrollment to Chariot.
Note: The process is only completed once your application is successfully submitted. If there’s an error preventing submission, your Chariot enrollment will remain incomplete. If there’s an issue after submitting your application, Neon Pay will notify you via email with details on the problem and any required next steps.
Enroll with Chariot After Merchant Account Setup
- If you choose to defer DAFpay enrollment during the initial merchant account setup, you can enroll later by navigating to the DAF Manager tab in your Neon Pay account.
- From the DAF Manager tab, select Enroll Now option to begin the enrollment process.
- Follow the same steps as described in the initial merchant account setup to enroll in DAFpay. You’ll be prompted to enter the necessary information, including personal details and any preferred organization name, as described in the original process.
